All Rodent pests can spread disease to both man and his livestock. The majority of rodents carry a bacterium, which causes leptospirosis (this is commonly known as weils disease), which is an increasingly common and dangerous disease.

They also carry a number of parasites, such as the flea, which in turn carries plague, a disease still found in over 40 countries today.

Rats - They have a large social stigma about them, as they are a major pest in almost every country in the world.

A rat can cause serious structural damage (e.g. chewing through wires and bases of doors etc) and spread disease. In the UK there is said to be more rats than the population of people, which proves the theory that you are never more than 70 feet away from a rat.

There is two main species of rat these been the Ship rat- Rattus Rattus (Black Rat) and the Norway rat - Rattus Norvegicus (Brown Rat) the latter been the more common of the two in this country as black rats are rarely seen these days.

House Mouse-Mus Domesticus is another major pest to the food industry and to domestic premises. They can be found at anytime of year indoors but they are more common in the winter when they are trying to find shelter from the cold. They can contaminate food stuffs and also cause damage by chewing almost anything, and because of their size and agility to find their way and live within buildings.
